Temple Newsman is famous for being the birthplace of Lord Darnley born 1545, second husband of Mary Queen of Scots married 1565 and father of James Vl born 19 June 1566. Darnley was assassinated 10 February 1567, Edinburgh. There has been a dwelling on the site for nearly 1000 years, the property of the Knights Templar, but it was Thomas Lord Darcy who built a new four-sided courtyard house, completed in 1520. However, Darcy was executed and the house was given to Lord and Lady Lennox by Henry Vlll, whose son Lord Darnley was born there. The house then fell into disrepair until 1622 when Sir Arthur Ingram bought it. He rebuilt the three-sided courtyard house we see today, retaining only the central west wing from the earlier building. His descendants lived there for the next 300 years. It was sold in 1922 with 917 acres of gardens and parkland for a nominal sum of £35,000 to Leeds City Council by the Hon Edward Wood, later the Earl of Halifax. As the contents had already been sold, the house was developed as a museum, building a collection of paintings, furniture, silver, ceramics and textiles, with the original treasures continually being returned to the house. The Home Farm is now a rare breeds centre, the gardens contain five national collections of plants and the parkland has been developed for sport and leisure facilities including golf, waling and open air concerts. The Temple Newsam Ten is often the first race of the year for me. A very muddy, off-road race with several very big puddles, including the infamous Puddle of Doom! I was suffering the effects of having just had covid for the first time. I guess I was lucky to have only just had it for the first time. My heart rate was all over the place during this race... it felt very strange! Luckily it's now back to normal, I didn't enjoy second guessing myself while I was running though! I am so super grateful for all of the fantastic photographers out there on course. Especially Andrew Swales and John Robson whose photos I have included in this video. Happy running, Nicola
Join me as I take you too Temple Newsam in Leeds, United Kingdom. Temple Newsam is one of the most regal homes in British history having homed some of the famous Kings and Queens ever to have lived. In this video I give a brief history of the building as well as the alleged haunting inside. I'm sure you will agree this is one of the most beautiful homes you will ever see. A little history... Temple Newsam House is a magnificent stately home, surrounded by acres of land. It is a Tudor Jacobean Mansion House with over 42 rooms. The whole estate is almost 1,000 acres including parkland, lakes and a farm. The grounds of Newsam was first recorded in the Doomsday book in 1086. The word Newsam means 'new houses' and 'temple' refers to the Knights Templar who used to own the land where the house is built. The house was built by Thomas Lord Darcy between 1500 - 1520. It was the largest house of its day in Yorkshire. During its long history there have been many important owners. It was seized by the King of England, Henry VIII, after he beheaded Darcy in 1537. King Henry gave the house to his niece, Margaret, as a wedding present when she married Matthew Lennox. Margaret and Matthew had a son, Henry Lord Darnley, who was born at Temple Newsam House in 1545. The house was seized for the second time by Queen Elizabeth I when Henry Lord Darnley married Mary Queen of Scots. One of the most famous rooms at Temple Newsam is Lady Hertford’s Chinese Drawing Room. The walls are hung with a delightful Chinese hand-painted wallpaper depicting a terraced garden with the sky full of exotic birds. It was given to Lady Hertford, the eldest daughter of Lord Irwin of Temple Newsam, in 1806 by the Prince Regent when he visited the house and began his close friendship with her. 20 years later, after finally putting it up, Lady Hertford added more birds cut out from her copy of Audubon’s famous book The Birds of America to make it even more lively. The film looks at this in detail as well as some of the original furniture now returned to the room. The Chinese drawing room and Audubon’s Birds of America were used to engage family learners in a project about images of birds around Temple Newsam House. With grateful thanks to both Jan Wells and Dean Hinchcliffe for their expertise in producing these films.
