Ever wondered what the different sail controls do on an RS Aero (or Laser, for that matter)? How much vang to put on downwind? Where to sit when going downwind in light air? As part of the clinic before the 2019 Sarasota Sailing Squadron One-Design Regatta, I held a sail trim session for attendees. Discussed were the effects on sailtrim at various points of sail by the primary controls of a singlehanded, unstayed-rig sailboat: - Downhaul/Cunningham; - Boom Vang; - Outhaul; - Mainsheet. Also fielded were questions specific to RS Aero sailing, such as capsize recovery, weight placement, daggerboard position, and something to never put a lot of weight on... Filmed by Boris Mezhibovskiy (who graciously consented to letting me post this), with great input and questions by Jim Myers, Phil Myerson, Max Loshinsky and Boris. Nothing instructive or even very interesting in this one, just a personal moment. Today, for the first time in nearly 11 months since a medical catastrophe nearly killed me, I sailed an Aero. It was a short trip, but a beginning. Later in the day, surprised myself and sailed 3 races with our local fleet! Many thanks to Anne Kochendorfer for letting me use her boat, and Rich Gordon for filming the occasion.

Boom vang is THE most important thing to get right on an Aero's rigging. This video shows you how! The sail needs to be fully up (see other video in this series about that). With brand new lines, you may need to tension the system a few times to get rid of stretch/creep for optimal setup. Note: When I say "in light air" in the video, I mean when running dead downwind or going by-the-lee in light/drifting conditions. You'd want more vang on when going upwind or reaching.
